Innovation for Smart Logistics. Fujin & Raijin. Vision 2030.

To provide the trucks and services the world needs today, UD Trucks has always been the challenger, developing our product based on the needs of society.

Societal issues facing the world are already becoming serious in Japan. Consequently, the logistic system that supports our lives is also facing massive challenges.

By 2030, the aging of the population will become even more severe and worsen the shortage of drivers.

As e-commerce booms, small package shipping will increase which will require more efficient logistics.

To achieve a sustainable society the logistics industry must continue to reduce CO2 emissions and improve energy efficiency.

UD Trucks’ aim is to meet the needs of the society and the logistics industry, and be our customers’ partner of choice.
We will go the extra mile to provide innovative solutions that are highly efficient, safe and sustainable to support smart logistics.

Imagine… By 2030, technology will open up paths to new modes of logistics.

Highways would have a dedicated lane equipped with wireless charging, on which heavy duty electric trucks would run; convoys of platooning trucks with one lead driver heading a line of three unmanned vehicles.

This is a world where one driver will safely transport four trucks’ worth of cargo.

Electric heavy-duty trucks would run silently through the city.

Through wireless communication, drones would directly connect with the trucks and the homes for efficient delivery.

This is an example of efficient logistics, friendly to both people and the environment.

Fujin & Raijin. Vision 2030.

Innovation for Smart Logistics through automation and electromobility

The future has already begun. However, infrastructure development, innovation in battery technology, and getting regulations on automated driving in place will take time. Our innovation journey is a step by step approach to provide the trucks and services the world needs today.

The Quon Vision, which we unveiled at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, became a reality in 2017 when we launched our all-new Quon—delivering industry-leading performance on our five smart logistics principles of drivability, fuel efficiency, safety, productivity and uptime.

At the beginning of 2018, together with our industry peers in Japan, we created history with a successful public road platooning test, the world’s first using heavy-duty trucks from four different truck makers.

We also successfully tested an electric medium-duty truck on a public road. The silent, safe and emission-free technology is an essential element of our newly launched UD Trucks Innovation Roadmap, “Fujin & Raijin. Vision 2030.”

We are developing solutions in the fields of automation and electromobility, in tandem with our advancements in connectivity and digitalization.

Fujin is the God of Wind, the invisible power that can move solid objects. We chose this as our symbol for the field of automation. UD Trucks is focusing on solutions for confined areas, including in-plant and harbor logistics, as well as highway platooning technologies. Between 2025 and 2030, we see the possibility of viable commercial solutions for autonomous driving on public roads.

Raijin is the God of Thunder, the power to energize. We chose this as our symbol for the field of electromobility. We are exploring different solutions for challenging issues, such as ever stricter environmental regulations. We aim at better energy efficiency while securing adequate pay load and mileage. To provide these solutions as early as possible, we are developing different technologies, such as battery and hybrid electric vehicles.

Today there are around 45,000 connected heavy duty UD trucks in operation. Connectivity enables improved services, including vehicle prognosis, remote repairs and proactive uptime support. With digitalization and  big data of customer driving behavior, we gain valuable insights to enhance automation and electrification further and make even safer and better trucks.

By providing innovative trucks and services step by step, we aim to have fully electric and autonomous trucks commercialized by the year 2030.

Japan is facing societal challenges ahead of other countries. In order to meet the changing needs of the society, UD Trucks will continue to provide the trucks and services the world needs today. With “Fujin & Raijin.Vison 2030.” we will keep going the extra mile for smart logistics.
